Antioxidant and nutritional profiles of fruits of ficus sansibarica from Botswana.

Water extracts from ripe fruits of Ficus sansibarica were assessed for in vitro antioxidant activity. Free radical scavenging activity was measured spectrophotometrically as maximum fading power of DPPH at 525nm. Total phenolic content of both water and methanolic extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteau method. The mineral composition was analysed using the optical emission spectrophotometer. Water and methanolic extracts exhibited 80% and 85% scavenging power at 200µg/ml. The total phenolic content of water and methanolic extracts was 3140 and 3580mg/l GAE respectively. Juice squeezed from fresh fruits contained 7.77mg/L Ca, 9.45mg/L Mg, 2.60mg/L Na, 58.3mg/L K, 0.01mg/L P and crude protein content of 0.18%. These results support the use of these fruits in alleviating diseases of free radical associated oxidative damage.
