Edible Myrciaria vexator Fruits: Bioactive Phenolics for Potential COPD Therapy.

Myrciaria vexator (Myrtaceae), commonly known as the blue grape or false jaboticaba, is native to Mesoamerica (Costa Rica, Panama) and Northern South America (Venezuela). The fruit which is locally known as "guayabo negro" is eaten fresh and also processed into jellies and drinks like many other Myrciaria fruits. Activity-guided fractionation of M. vexator led to the identification of bioactive phenolic constituents: cyanidin-3-O-glucoside,delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, 2-O-(3,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)-2,4,6-trihydroxyphenylaceticacid, jaboticabin, and ellagic acid. Three compounds cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, jaboticabin, and ellagicacid were further assessed in the current study and were shown to significantly reduce cigarette smoke extract induced IL-8 production and MMP-1 expression in an in vitro cell culture model. These bioactivities are of significant relevance to the pathogenesis of COPD, as increased IL-8 and MMP-1 levels are observed in the lungs of COPD patients. Ellagic acid treatment of cells reduced IL-8 production and MMP-1 expression from smoke exposure at concentrations lower than other lead compounds. Based on these biological activities, the reported antioxidant properties, and wide spread availability of this compound, ellagic acid is being pursued for further drug development studies using in vivo models of COPD.
