Anatomical characters and ultrastructure of leaf of Cissampelos L. of Northeast of Brazil. Cissampelos L. (Menispermaceae) comprises about 20 species and is found in North and South America, Africa, and Asia. The Menispermacee family is known by giving the poison called "curare" obtained from species of several genera like Abuta, Anomospermum, Chondodendrum, inter alia, which are used by the South American Indians. In Brazil, Cissampelos is represented by ten species of herbaceous twining vines or lianas. It is a group of species used in the indigenous and popular medicine to cure many illnesses. The morphological similarities among the species of Cissampelos are remarkable and more times are difficult to distinguish them as well. This study presents a comparative anatomical study of the leaves of Cissampelos of Northeast of Brazil, which was carried out using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaf epidermal was studied to obtain data on epidermal characteristics and its ultrastructure to evaluate their taxonomic significance. As results, the anatomical characters were observed in the studied species as blade leaves hypostomatic, stomata anomocytic, dorsiventral mesophyll, collateral vascular bundles and venation actinodromous-brochidrodome, which correspond to patterns recorded for Menispermaceae. Some micromorphological characters on the leaf epidermal like the cuticular waxes, the presence of papillae in epidermis, the anticlinal walls epidermal cells, the distribution, density and type of trichomes, and also the type and distribution of epicuticular wax proved to be the most useful characteristics to distinguish the species in this study.
