Traditional Medicine Stations: A Design to Promote the Study and Popularization of Lao Traditional Medicine Practices.

Recognizing the important role of traditional medicine in Laos, the Ministry of Health of Lao PDR established the "Research Institute of Medicinal Plants" in 1976, today the Institute of Traditional Medicine (ITM). The mission of ITM is to conduct adaptive research on medicinal plants and Traditional Medicine of Laos. ITM established a network of 10 Traditional Medicine Stations (TMSs) in 10 [today 13] of the 17 provinces of the country. TMSs consist of one or more buildings with a staff of 3-5, whose directors include university graduates, a faculty of pharmacy graduate, or graduate of secondary medical technical schools. Other staff members often include senior traditional healers and Buddhist monks. ITM staff, together with TMS personnel, carry out research to inventory and document traditional medicinal uses of plants, review potential toxic effects of plants used in traditional medicinal preparations, formulate herbal medicinal preparations for associated Traditional Medical Hospitals, and educate healers and the local communities on sustainable practices when using medicinal plants.
