Next Generation Identification and Analysis Demonstrated Using Sedges and Grasses.

Accurate identification is a critical element in determining the quality of any research or report involving biological organisms. I present here a new approach to identification that enable users to draw on an integrated combination of rich descriptive information and gigapixels of imagery. Microsoft Silverlight and Pivot are used to provide complete zoomability of the images, display of increasingly detailed labels within the image tiles, and side by side comparison of taxa. Early testing with undergraduate students and workshop participants resulted in high success rates with these notoriously difficult plant groups.
