Grab that Research Baton and Teach: Bessey Award Winners Sundberg, Marshall [1]. Research Methods in Pedagogy. Both qualitative and quantitative assessment strategies have their place in designing and testing pedagogical tools and techniques for improving student learning. Qualitative strategies include focus groups, journals, interviews,concept mapping, textbook annotation, and a variety of short in-class activities such as minute papers and muddiest point writings. Quantitative strategies include pre-and post-tests, surveys, and use of clickers. Examples of successful implementation of many of these strategies will be provided for student active lecture courses, inquiry-based laboratory courses and integrated lecture/laboratory courses.
