Kaplan Memorial Lecture - Dr. Ralph Quatrano

Quatrano, Ralph [1].

Mechanisms of cellular polarity:a comparative approach from mosses to seed plant.

Dr. Ralph S. Quatrano will givethe 2011 Kaplan Memorial Lecture in Comparative Development. He received his undergraduate degree fromColgate University (1962) and his Ph.D. in Biology from Yale University(1968). During his career he has heldprofessorships at Oregon State University, where he was the founding directorof the Center for Gene Research and at the University of North Carolina atChapel Hill. Ralph arrived at WashingtonUniversity in 1998 where he is immediate past Dean of Arts and Sciences andDean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. He is also chair of the Executive Council ofthe Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences and initiated the jointresearch program in Plant Sciences with Monsanto. Ralph was the Editor of The Plant Cell (1998-2003), and served on the Board of ReviewingEditors for Science (1991-98). He served as President of ASPB (1882-93) andis a Fellow of the AAAS, the St. Louis Academy of Science and the ASPB.

Dr. Quatrano's research interests arefocused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling the development ofplant embryos; from the establishment of polarity in the zygote and earlyembryo, to the hormonal control of gene expression during embryomaturation. He was a leadinginvestigator and corresponding author of an international consortium thatsequenced, characterized and published the genome of Physcomitrella patens and has been a pioneer in establishing it asan experimental system. He haspublished over 159 research papers on plants as diverse as Fucus and Arabidopsis. Ralph will discuss his seminal contributionsto our understanding of plant development, specifically, the critical roles ofthe cytoskeleton, cell wall and hormones in establishing and maintaining cellpolarity across different plant groups.
